A grab bar is only as good as what it is fixed to

This is the single most common thing we are called to put right. A grab bar screwed into drywall with plastic anchors looks identical to one anchored into studs or solid blocking. It behaves identically too, right up until the moment somebody puts their full weight on it.

A bar that pulls out of the wall is worse than no bar at all, because it has been trusted for months. We fix into structure, every time, and if there is nothing to fix into we add blocking first. It is not a more expensive job. It is just the job done properly.

The change that makes the most difference is usually the bathroom

A step-over tub is very often the point at which washing independently stops being safe. Converting it to a walk-in shower with a proper seat and correctly placed bars tends to buy more independence than anything else we install.

After that it is lighting. More falls happen on stairs and in hallways at night than anywhere else in the house, and better lighting on the stairs, the landing and the entrance costs very little compared with what it prevents.

How we work with older clients

At your pace. We explain what we are doing before we do it, and again afterwards if that helps. We do not upsell, we do not invent problems, and we do not quote one number on the phone and a different one at the door.

No job is too small to call about. A high bulb, a stuck window and a loose handrail is a perfectly normal visit for us. If somebody has had a fall, say so when you call and we will prioritise it.

There are also funding programmes in Ontario that help pay for accessibility work, and the amounts and administration vary by municipality. We will point you at what applies to you whether or not you end up hiring us.

Questions

Asked most often

Is any job too small?

No. Grab bars, a high bulb, a stuck door, better stair lighting. That is a completely normal visit and it is a good part of what we do. If you have several small things, save them into a list and we will do them in one go.

Can you convert a tub into a walk-in shower?

Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we do for older clients. We will look at the space, the plumbing and the door width and tell you honestly what is achievable and what it will cost before anything starts.

Is there help paying for accessibility work?

There are Ontario programmes that assist with accessibility modifications, and what is available and how it is administered varies by municipality. We will tell you what applies to your situation and point you at it regardless of whether you hire us for the work.
